Broke the bell housing off of my 4R100

It was a freak accident I guess? The universal going from the drive shaft to the rear broke the other day, so I replace it. Doing the real slow back and fourth thing in the street to listen for noises. everything sounds okay. but the truck has a bad vibration... Im thinking maybe the tranny mount or motor mount went out with the drive shaft. Nope everything looks good. but wait what the! Both sides up where the bellhousing would meet the trans if they were separate pieces split.

Here come my list of questions. Where should I look to find a new trans for this, since it doesn't look to be rebuildable? How much are they going for? or should I pull it and attempt at having it welded? The trans was on its way out and probably ready for a rebuild any way. The gear oil didnt gush out but there are a few drips coming from somewhere I am thinking[hoping] just leaking out of the torque converter since there is a gap in there now.

Also what year transmissions are compatible for my truck? 2001 f250 4wd 7.3l... are 2wd and 4wd trannies interchangeable at all? and are diesel trannies different than gas trannies?

thanks guys.

How the farm fresh eggs does that happen?!

Seriously though, I would call around to salvage yards and try to find a transmission out of a wrecked truck. I beleive the bell housing is cast and I wouldn't risk welding it.

Its a crazy break. and the cracks go up both sides, I can probably assume that the bell housing is completely separated from the rest of the trans.. Welding will be a last ditch effort if I cant find anything else to replace it will. I have had cast al VW transmissions welded in the past with good results.

what is a fair or average price for one of these transmissions now-a-days so I know a good starting point for comparing prices and bargaining. Also what is an average cost of a rebuild becasue I def want to have the new trans rebuilt before it goes under the truck.

Not trying to be a smart a$$ but there is a significant difference between an engine that produces 45 hp and on that packs over 250. I had the trans repaired on my old VW powered sand rail but I didn't keep it much longer after that.

Honestly couldn't tell you what a fair price is on a trans. Hopefully others will chime in that have had to buy one and can tell you what the going rate is.

I have had a bell housing welded before. it was in a full size jimmy, the bell housing broke all the way around the housing the only thing holding the trans to the engine was the flex plate. After it was welded i put a new o ring on the pump of the transmission (just in case it got to hot) and it was like new, never had a problem out of it and i beat that truck good afterwards.

I had a ranger 5r55e case welded last year. It was broken from an accident and after I had it welded I didn't have any problems with it. A good welder can get it from both sides in that area. I wouldn't be afraid of welding it.
