What brand of head studs you running?

 

You shouldn't have to retorque them. Anytime I have done cylinder heads. Once you go through the torque sequeance that is it. If you have to retorque them, then something was done wrong.

 

i haven't done them yet but was reading the new diesel power and they said to re torque the head studs after running it a couple times and every 6 months after that. but if u guys say u don't have to, then i'll take your word for it.

I don't understand why you would have to retorque them.

I can see retorquing them could cause damage the head gaskets.

There is a torque sequeance that is suppose to be followed when torquing the cylinder head. So there should be no reason why you would have to retorque them.

 

I am not sure what the guidelines would be in our paricular application; however, retorquing head studs is a very good idea. In fact after you think you are done with the install you should break the nuts loose one turn and retorque to final spec in one smooth pull doing each stud in the torque sequence. Though not a later down the road re torque that is still a retorque. I would think going back once and checking them would be sufficient. If they are loose check again later. 50-60 heat cycles should be good enough time wise after initial install. Then I could see going 6 months and if all was good then I probably would never check again unless you are just anal or really think you are working the studs.

 

call me dumb but how would you retorque them? would you have to tear down the motor to get to them? or can you get to all of them without removing any of the stuff on top of the motor? i would think if you have to tear the truck apart to retorque them it would be to much of a p.i.t.a. i agree i think just do the torque sequence and you'll be good. what about studs done at the dealer? do people take them in to get retorqued 6 months later? probably not.:dunno:

 

I would agree on the retorque after a month or so to see if they loosened up. My last truck was a 92 cummins, couldnt afford to o ring the head so I torqued the bolts past spec (cant remember torque), this is what a engine builder told me I could get away with and it worked, 45 psi boost. Anyone ever try this on a 6.0? Cant see how this would hurt.

 

i guess no one re torque them and they don't have any problems, and besides after doing them once i don't think i will want to go back in and re torque them.
